When is treatment needed?

The main clinial indications for corrective surgery are narrowing of the interior of the chest and deleterious effects on the internal organs (heart and lungs). Further indications include deformity of the spine (back pain and abnormal posture) caused by defects in rib development, and also severe psychological distress.

Individual suffering from chest deformity depends very much on subjective factors and on the patient's surroundings. A common reason for treatment is the psychological strain that can substantially impair self-confidence and enjoyment of life as early as adolescence. Not infrequently, conspicuous deformities lead to behavioural difficulties, problems with relationships, and long-term costly psychotherapy.

The question of whether heart and lungs are functionally impaired is best investigated by a specialist physician or paediatrician (internist, cardiologist, chest physician or specialist in sports medicine). The assessment of the space within the chest, and whether there is encroachment upon the heart and lungs, is best made by CT (computed tomography, interpreted by a radiologist). Where there are associated spinal problems you will need to seek the opinion of a spinal surgeon or orthopaedic surgeon in addition.

In every case, a clinical assessment should be sought from an experienced doctor. Whether an operation is necessary, and what surgical method is most suitable, are questions that need to be judged on a case-by-case basis.
